In 1982, Porsche began developing a high-performance all-wheel-drive sports car with an automatic transmission and around 370 hp . The project was designated 965 , later 969 , and served as a test platform for various drive concepts. During development, Porsche even tested a V8 from an IndyCar as well as its own prototype V8 before finally selecting a 3.6-liter V8 from Audi. However, this engine only fit into the cramped rear compartment with considerable difficulty – heat problems and power losses were commonplace.

Despite ambitious goals, the project was discontinued at the end of 1988 , after only 16 prototypes had been built . Only one vehicle still exists today – a fascinating relic of Porsche's development history.
