The iconic final evolution of the Optima series, revived in all its glory!
At the 1987 Electric Off-Road Car World Championship in Great Britain, the Optima Mid prototype dominated the 4WD-A Main Final, securing 5 of the 10 starting positions. Following this success, the Optima Mid was commercialized and gained worldwide racing recognition. In 1988, the Turbo Optima Mid Special, the final evolution of the Optima Mid, was released in limited numbers and sold out immediately due to overwhelming demand. Now, this legendary machine returns in 2025 as Volume 18 of the Kyosho Vintage Series. The original Turbo Optima Mid Special featured an 18mm longer wheelbase than the Optima Mid, significantly improving high-speed stability and cornering. The main chassis was designed for optimized battery weight distribution and was constructed from FRP laminated between carbon fiber plates – an ideal balance of flexibility and rigidity. The timing belt and timing belt cover were also specially developed for the Turbo Optima Mid Special, as was the body, which was precisely matched to the chassis. This faithful reissue retains all these defining features while being adapted to modern drive systems and RC electronics. Previously optional parts are now included as standard, supplemented by several newly developed components. Unlike the original, this is not a limited edition, but a permanent addition to the Kyosho range. The return of the Turbo Optima Mid Special to modern racetracks is a dream come true for all fans – whether they owned the original or missed out due to its limited production. Now everyone can drive the ultimate evolution of the Optima!

- While retaining the original design, adjustments were made to support modern RC electronics and power sources.
- Highly efficient belt-driven 4WD system ensures stability and consistent control on RC race tracks and off-road courses.
- Uses 48-pitch pinion and main gears; optionally, 78T/80T main gears can be fitted.
- Equipped with a reinforced slipper clutch for high-performance motors and batteries. Adjustable with the Ultima RB's dual slipper seat.
- The included battery holder is compatible with various battery types. By modifying part of the main chassis, NiMH or NiCd batteries can also be mounted side by side.
- The reinforced nylon rear wing offers a balanced combination of strength and flexibility and is also used on the Optima Mid. Alternatively, a Scorpion-style wing can be fitted.
- The rear steering knuckle allows a toe angle adjustment of 0°, 1° or 2° by replacing the bushings.
- Aluminum hexagonal wheel hubs are securely fixed with screw pins.
- The drive train is fully ball-bearing mounted, ensuring high rotational efficiency.
- Blister packaging in the style of the original product evokes nostalgic memories of this era.
Thanks to a wide selection of optional tuning parts, this model offers extensive customization possibilities. It's not just a reissue – it's a fully-fledged modern racer!

Based on the same basic design as the 1988 Turbo Optima Mid Special, the longer wheelbase compared to the standard Optima Mid provides significantly improved driving stability.

The main chassis is made of a hybrid material with FRP sandwiched between carbon plates, offering balanced flexibility under load for smooth handling. The slots, inspired by the original, also allow for a split battery configuration.

The redesigned body has been adapted to the longer wheelbase and optimized for modern battery sizes, while retaining the original appearance. Additionally, a dust-protected underbody has been integrated for improved aerodynamics. A decal sheet for authentic color schemes is included.

The new Turbo Optima Mid Special features newly developed narrow 50mm front tires and rims. The yellow, molded plastic rims match the rear wheels, while the block-tread tires offer excellent grip.

The oil-filled shock absorbers with gold-anodized surfaces are inspired by the shock absorbers of Kyosho's top-of-the-line models from the 1980s. Medium-stiff springs at the front and rear ensure sensitive and precise handling.

The aluminum parts are finished in Kyosho Works gunmetal – a color not available on the 1988 production model. The shock towers are made of black FRP.

Standard universal drive shafts on the front axle reduce drive losses, minimize speed loss in curves and prevent components from coming loose during operation.

A newly developed timing belt cover for the extended wheelbase reliably protects the drive belt from dirt and stones. The precise fit simplifies the installation of the upper deck.

Tie rods and upper wishbones with turnbuckle design allow for quick, stepless length adjustments for rapid setup changes.

The rear steering knuckle allows for a toe angle adjustment of 0°, 1° or 2° by changing the bushings, thus offering easy setup adjustments for different track conditions.

Front and rear ball differentials ensure smooth running and maximum traction with controlled slippage.
